Social Skills & Communication

Supporting Social Communication in Everyday Life

Strong communication skills are essential for making friends, taking turns in conversation, understanding social cues, and building positive relationships. For many children, especially those with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), social communication doesn’t come naturally — and that’s where targeted support can make a big difference. At Look Who’s Talking SLP, we provide evidence-based social communication therapy for children who find it difficult to connect, share, and interact with others in everyday situations.

Our therapy supports children with a range of social challenges, from struggling to join in with peers to finding it hard to interpret facial expressions or body language. We focus on building functional, real-world communication that improves confidence, independence, and inclusion. Whether your child has a formal diagnosis or simply finds social interactions tricky, we offer communication skills support tailored to their age, personality, and learning style.

Sessions are available in-clinic in Sinagra, in schools or homes across Perth’s northern suburbs, or via Telehealth. Our services are available to both private clients and NDIS participants.

Signs Your Child May Benefit from Social Skills Support

Consider an assessment if your child:

  • Has difficulty making or keeping friends
  • Struggles to join in play or group activities
  • Doesn’t pick up on social cues, such as tone of voice or facial expressions
  • Has trouble taking turns in conversations or staying on topic
  • Talks mostly about their own interests or doesn’t ask questions to conversational partners
  • Appears socially withdrawn or “in their own world”
  • Has been diagnosed with Autism or is undergoing assessment
  • Shows frustration or anxiety in social situations

These challenges can impact a child’s self-esteem, learning, and connection to others — but with the right guidance, they can build the confidence to communicate more easily.

How We Help

At Look Who’s Talking SLP, our social communication therapy is fun, practical, and personalised to each child’s needs. We start with a thorough assessment to understand how your child currently interacts, communicates, and responds in different settings. From there, we develop a therapy plan to best suit your child, targeting areas such as conversational turn-taking, reading non-verbal cues, managing emotions, and flexible thinking in social situations.

We also work closely with families and educators to ensure strategies are carried over into home, school, and the community — creating more opportunities for your child to connect and grow socially.

FAQs – Social Skills & Communication

No. While we support many children with ASD, your child does not need a formal diagnosis to benefit from therapy. If they’re struggling socially, we can help.
Pragmatic language refers to how we use language socially — for example, knowing when to speak, how to respond to others, and how to interpret tone or body language. Difficulties in this area are common in children with Autism and other neurodiverse profiles.
We provide individualised speech therapy for children with Autism, using strategies that support regulation, flexibility, and real-life social interaction — not just scripted phrases.
