Building Strong Foundations in Literacy

Learning to read and write is a major milestone in a child’s development — but for some children, these skills don’t come easily. Difficulties with decoding, spelling, and understanding written language can affect confidence, classroom performance, and long-term academic success. At Look Who’s Talking SLP, we provide specialised literacy therapy to support children who are struggling with early reading and writing skills or who may have specific learning challenges such as Dyslexia.

Our team uses structured, evidence-based methods to build literacy from the ground up, including the highly regarded Sounds-Write program, which focuses on phonics, blending, segmenting, and phonemic awareness. Whether your child is in the early years of school or in later primary needing extra support, we offer engaging, practical strategies tailored to their learning style and developmental level.

We offer flexible options for reading and writing support, including in-clinic, school-based, and Telehealth sessions across Sinagra and Perth’s northern suburbs.

Signs Your Child May Benefit from Literacy Support

Book a literacy assessment if your child:

  • Struggles to sound out or decode unfamiliar words
  • Has difficulty spelling common words
  • Avoids reading or writing tasks at school or home
  • Has trouble understanding what they’ve read
  • Can read words aloud but struggles with comprehension
  • Is not meeting literacy benchmarks for their age
  • Mixes up letters, skips words, or reverses letters when writing
  • Has a family history of dyslexia or learning differences
  • May benefit from targeted phonemic awareness and structured support
  • Needs additional help to develop strong literacy skills

Difficulties with reading and writing are more common than many families realise — the good news is that with the right support, children can catch up and build lasting confidence.

How We Help

At Look Who’s Talking SLP, our literacy therapy is grounded in the science of reading. We use the Sounds-Write program, a systematic synthetic phonics program designed to explicitly teach the connections between letters and sounds. This approach is especially effective for children with reading difficulties, including those with Dyslexia.

We start with a detailed assessment to understand your child’s current strengths and areas of need in decoding, spelling, comprehension, and phonemic awareness. Therapy is then tailored to your child— using interactive, structured sessions that are both fun and functional.

By providing consistent, targeted literacy therapy, we aim to close learning gaps, build confidence, and foster a lifelong love of reading.
