Early Identification for Lifelong Success
The early years of school are a critical window for identifying communication challenges. Children who struggle with speech, understanding language, or expressing themselves may fall behind socially or academically if these issues go unnoticed. That’s why school speech assessments, kindergarten speech screening, and early identification are key to supporting success in the classroom and beyond.
At Look Who’s Talking SLP, we partner with local schools and early learning centres to provide flexible, on-site language assessments. Our team of experienced speech pathologists visits schools in Term 1 and/or Term 4 to screen for speech, language, and communication difficulties in children from kindy to Year 1. These screeners are designed to be fun and non-intimidating — while giving families and educators valuable insights into each child’s communication strengths and areas needing support.
Our aim is to identify concerns early, equip parents and educators with clear guidance, and facilitate referrals for therapy where needed. Whether you’re a parent or a school teacher, we’re here to make early intervention straightforward and effective.
What’s Included in a Speech & Language Screener?
Our school and kindy screeners assess the following areas, with flexible screening packages available to suit different needs:
- Speech sounds (articulation clarity and development)
- Understanding of language (following instructions, answering questions)
- Expressive language (sentence structure, vocabulary, storytelling)
- Phonological awareness skills (hearing and manipulating sounds in words)
Screenings take approximately 20 minutes per child and are conducted in a quiet, child-friendly space within the school or early learning setting.

How We Help
At Look Who’s Talking SLP, we believe in prevention and early support. Our team works directly with schools to schedule school speech assessments at convenient times during the year — often early in Term 1 (to guide planning) or Term 4 (to prepare for transitions). After screening, we provide each family with a written report that outlines whether the child is developing as expected or may benefit from a more in-depth language assessment and ongoing therapy.
For children who require ongoing support, we offer in-clinic therapy at our Sinagra location, mobile services to homes or schools, and Telehealth sessions — all with a warm, friendly, and family-centred approach.
FAQs – School & Kindy Screeners
A screener is a brief evaluation to determine if a child is meeting expected developmental milestones. A full assessment is more comprehensive and is recommended if concerns are flagged during screening.
All screenings are carried out by qualified speech pathologists from our team at Look Who’s Talking SLP.
If the screener highlights any areas of concern, we’ll provide a written summary and recommend the next steps, whether that’s monitoring the development or pursuing a more comprehensive language assessment. We’ll guide you through the process and discuss the best course of action together.
We’re always open to supporting additional schools and daycare centres across Perth, so if you’re interested, don’t hesitate to get in touch with us.
